Sports ban for Viagra?

It has been known for sometime that the drug Viagra has been used by professional baseball players, athletes, skiers and body builders to boost their performance. Athletes have believed that using Viagra tablets helps improve their performance as its effect helps provide more oxygen to the muscles. This it seems has led to a marked increase in the number of athletes taking the drug to boost their performance.

In 2004, a research institute in Germany showed that Viagra boosts the performance of mountain climbers and in 2006 some research done by Stanford University showed a 15 percent increase in the speed of the cyclists who took Viagra albeit in alpine regions over 3000m.

However the French daily Le Parisien reported on Sunday that the Cycle Union of France is considering the inclusion of Viagra among banned substances. Le Parisien also reported the Italian Mafia and other criminal groups in the UK feed Viagra to racehorses in order to boost the outcome of races in their favour.
