Viagra: The romance pill

It is often said that the only reason why marriage was invented was so that people could have legitimate sex. Although this is not true, it does point out the fact that sex forges a strong bond between the two people who practice it. Relationships that have an active sexual life are found to be more likely of lasting longer than those without. In fact, in incidences of marriages that sadly ended in divorce, the frequency of sex is usually one of the first things to dwindle acting as an indicator that all is not well at home.

It is in the midst of this essential bond between a couple that impotency occasionally rears its head. Male impotency refers to the inability of a man to possess or maintain an erection, even though he is mentally sexually aroused. Unsurprisingly this puts a serious burden on the man and his partner as they struggle to adjust to a life without sex.

That was until Pfizer announced the release of the drug known as Viagra.

Viagra is officially ( and by officially I mean medically) recognized as one of the best cures for impotency triggered by physical conditions. The male erection is dependant on a steady flow of  blood which causes the sponge like muscles of the penis to become engorged with blood, very much similar to the inflation of a balloon. For most men who are unable to have a steady erection, the condition is found to be caused by a weakened flow of blood through the arteries. It is this area that Viagra addresses.

Viagra fights against the negative actions of an enzyme referred to as pde-5 ( fill name phosphodiesterase-50.  By doing this it allows the muscles in the penis increase in size thus permitting the better flow of blood into the penis. This in turn allows the male erection to occur. Another effect of the inhibition of pde-5 is that the production of nitric oxide is increased. This consequently enhances the efficiency of the body's blood vessels and heart-an advantage that has since seen the use of Viagra employed in sufferers of such condition.

Viagra is offered in various dosages depending on the severity of their condition. Generally 50mg is the most common prescription give to men suffering from erectile dysfunction. For more extreme cases, a 100mg is administered. This however is the highest limit permissible. Since Viagra tablets are taken orally the actions of the drug are not immediate. It is usually advised to take the tablets 1 to 3 hours before the commencement of sexual activity.

A common misconception about Viagra is that, acting as an aphrodisiac would, Taking Viagra causes the stimulation of sexual desire. This is not true. Viagra does not cause such stimulation and so taking of the drug will not leave you with an unwanted erection in the middle of work day as is also commonly claimed. Viagra walks by enhancing your sexual thoughts. Simply put, if you don't want an erection, then you won't get one!
